Grove manufactures the top three best-selling models (RT890E, RT765E-2 and RT880E), which is not surprising since they have been a market leader since the late 1950’s with their introduction of rough terrain cranes.
During the fall of 2015, Data Analyst Brian Lee wrote an article on the optimal selling points of cranes on the resale market. He found that “the most common age for cranes is in the 5 to 7 year range.” In order to help those in the market for used cranes make more informed decisions, we took a look at our resale channel database to determine the crane models sold within the past 5 years in the United States and Canada. The table above shows the rankings of the top selling cranes by market activity. Grove manufactures the top three best-selling models (RT890E, RT765E-2 and RT880E), which is not surprising since they have been a market leader since the late 1950’s with their introduction of rough terrain cranes. Next on the list is the Terex RT 670, and rounding out the list is Tadano with their GR-1000XL-2 model. Interestingly, only rough terrain cranes made it to the top 5 list. Rough Terrain cranes are widely used in construction for their mobility, so it is not surprising that they fill the list of top cranes.

Knowing which cranes are the most popular is useful when looking to get a good deal on a used crane. Another important piece of information is knowing the average meter reads for each model. Our experience in the markets for used equipment has shown that usage is one of the top factors in setting accurate pricing. Above is a figure that shows the average meter reads by model. The GR-100XL-2 had the highest utilization of the top 5 models by far. The remaining models had average meter reads between 1,228 and 1,890.

Best, in this case, is defined as having the highest levels of market activity and does not account for taxes or transportation costs. Due to population size and area, we expected to see higher market activity in California and Texas. However, it is likely that crane users in those states purchased other models of rough terrain cranes. Another important detail on the quest to find a good deal on a used crane is knowing where to look. The best state in which to purchase any of the Grove cranes that made it to the list is Florida. This could be a result of the strong presence of Grove dealers in Florida. The best state to purchase an RT 670 or GR-1000XL-2 is Georgia. It’s important to note that this only applies to the used market for cranes.
