Key Takeaways for Decision Makers
FINANCE: Freightliners are currently holding the highest average depreciation rate between 2005 and 2010 model years.

Some of the most popular heavy duty commercial trucks on the market include the Freightliner C-120, International 8600, Kenworth W900, Peterbilt 387, and Volvo VNL64T. All of these are heavy duty conventional tractors on the used market with GVW above 50,000 lbs. The MSRPs for each of these trucks ranges between $130k and $155k. Currently, these are the trucks dominating the used truck market yet the variation in values is quite large. More specifically, it is apparent that the Kenworth W900 is selling much higher than the remaining models whereas the International 8600 falls well below the average heavy duty market price for the 2010 model year.

The Volvo VNL64T has the highest depreciation rate between 2010 and 2009 models as well as between the 2007 and 2006s. The highest average depreciation among all 5 trucks between model years is for the 2007 and 2006s. This is a common trend seen throughout the used truck industry and not specific to these models alone. The lowest overall average price drop between model years falls between 2006 and 2005. After the large drop in 2006 model prices, trends begin to gradually plateau.

Other popular heavy duty models that are currently flooding the market include the International 4300 and ProStar as well as the Freightliner M2 106, Cascadia, Kenworth T-660, and Peterbilt 386. Pricing for a Peterbilt 386 is currently averaging 22% higher than the 387 for model years 2005-2010. The Freightliner M2 106 has the smallest depreciation rate between model years averaging at -4.1%.
